What is AVID? Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an academic college readiness system that prepares students for college readiness and success. At Renaissance Middle School AVID is school wide. All of our teachers incorporate AVID methodologies and Strategies within their learning environments.
At Renaissance Middle School, we have 6 sections of the AVID Elective. We have two 6th grade AVID Elective sections, two 7th grade AVID Elective sections and two 8th grade AVID sections. Students in the AVID Elective complete an AVID application and interview for a spot in AVID.
In AVID class, students receive instruction utilizing a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, tutor‐facilitated study groups, motivational activities and academic success skills. Students participate in activities that incorporate strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading (WICOR) to support their academic growth.
In AVID Content Area classes, AVID's research-based strategies are utilized to continuously develop students academic skills by providing students with strategies that are proven to be successful.
AVID is a nationwide program that was adopted by Fulton County in 2014.
What and how do AVID students learn? AVID students work on academic and personal goals and communication, adjusting to the high school setting. Students increase awareness of their personal contributions to their learning, as well as their involvement in their school and community. There is an emphasis on critical reading and analytical writing, focusing on personal goals and public speaking. Students will work in collaborative settings, learning how to participate in collegiate discussions and use sources to support their ideas and opinions. Students refine their study skills and test‐taking, note‐taking, and research techniques. They take an active role in field trips and guest speaker preparations and presentations. Their college research includes financial topics and building their knowledge on colleges and careers of interest.
AVID students learn reading strategies that will help them in their current courses and future high school courses. Texts vary from philosophical pieces to contemporary articles from AVID Weekly Articles. Additionally, students learn how to write to learn and work on developing their writing skills. During in-class tutorials, students take ownership of their learning. All students are expected to maintain an organized binder, take notes in all subjects, complete Learning Logs, participate in Socratic Seminars, be active in team-building activities, participate in Philosophical Chairs, complete homework in all subjects on time and with effort, and so forth. Students are expected to maintain a strong GPA (2.6+), be leaders, and demonstrate good character.
